Biography
Melnyk Valeriy Sergiyovych was born on January 24th in 1952 in the village of Chervone, Bar rayon, Vinnytsya oblast in the officers’ family.
In the 1974 he graduated the Vinnytsya Polytechnic Institute and started the postgraduate studies in the KPI by the specialty “System theory and Control theory” and worked in the department of the professor V.I. Ivanenko. After graduation he worked in the Institute of Cybernetics of AS USSR since 1979 till 1996, where began as a junior research assistant and finished as a head of division. In 1991 after defense of the doctor thesis, headed the division of the control system synthesis of the Institute of Cybernetics of NAS of Ukraine.
Since 1996 V.S. Melnyk was the chair of Department for applied nonlinear analysis at Institute for Applied Systems Analysis of NAS of Ukraine and Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. In 2000 he was elected the corresponding member of NAS of Ukraine. Since 2002 he appointed the director of the Test Center of the Education Quality Monitoring Institute. Since 2003 – he was the deputy director on the scientific work of the ESC “IASA”. He worked as a professor of the mechanic and mathematic faculty of Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University (since 1997) and the leading scientific worker of the Institute of Mathematics of NAS of Ukraine (since 2004).
V.S. Melnyk was one of the founders of the modern nonlinear analysis theory.
The results of the researches of V.S. Melnyk are well-known and popular outside the Ukraine. He is the author of more than 160 scientific works, printed in the prestigious scientific journals, among which there are 8 monographs.
V.S. was often invited to the international Congresses and conferences as a plenary lector, to the leading scientific institutions of Spain, Italy, Poland, France, USA and other countries.
For many years he taught students of the Kyiv Polytechnic University and students of the mechanic and mathematic faculties of the Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University, choosing the talented youth attaching a great attention to its scientific training through the postgraduate studies. He prepared 16 candidates of Science and 4 doctors of science.
Due to his both high qualification, fidelity to principles, and democratic approach and humanity, Valeriy Sergiyovych gained deserved authority and respect among the wide scientific community, colleagues and students.
Among his hobbies were literature, music, tennis, mountain skis, tourism.
